Webelos 1 News & Information

Eagles were on fire at a very cold Klondike!

I want to send a very big "congratulations!" to our scouts who participated in last week's Klondike Derby. It was a truly fantastic day even with the cold, and our Webelos handled the stations like seasoned pros. A lot of the station masters told me they did better than a lot of Boy Scouts!

Thank you, parents, for making sure your boys were well-dressed for the weather! Everyone stayed warm and comfortable even in the frigid cold, and that went a long way to making sure everyone had lots of fun.

Some highlights from the day:

  • Matthew V. did a great job as our Senior Patrol Leader. His loud, clear call of "Pack 119 -- permission to enter!" at each station scored us big points in Scout Spirit
  • Adam gave perfect directions in the "Snowblind Stretcher Carry"
  • James represented the den in fine fashion while some of the boys fit in their basketball game -- he got perfect scores on both the "Knot Tying" and "Fire-Starting/Water Boiling" stations
  • Mattew F. put great ideas into practice in building a shelter any scout would have been proud to sleep in
  • Working together as a team, the whole den earned a perfect score in Orienteering. The station masters were amazed at how well they performed some really difficult tasks. They were 100% right on all three activities and got another perfect score.
  • Who will ever forget "Klondike Stew!"
I was very, very proud of our boys. They exhibited the best characteristics of scouting: Teamwork, creativity, cheerfulness, knowledge, skill, cooperation, enthusiasm and plain old hard work. It was an honor to be able to tell people "those are my scouts."

For those of you who couldn't make it this year, I hope you can join us next time. It was a day I wouldn't have missed for anything, and I can't wait to do it again.

You should all be very proud of your sons!

The Eagles Den ROCKS!!!

The Eagles did a fantastic job at October's Pack Night! Your skits were really funny, and it looked like everyone was very impressed by your hiking sticks!

Your costumes were great, and you won the prestigious "turn-your-den-leader-into-a-mummy-with-toilet-paper" contest.

I heard a lot of people say it was one of the best Halloween Pack Nights EVER -- way to go, Eagles!

Next up, we keep working toward our Webelos badges. I think we can all earn them in time for the Blue and Gold dinner -- let's go for it!

Our busy den gets a name -- The Eagles!

Our den has been very busy in our first month. For one thing, as Webelos, we get to choose a den name. We came up with a list of great ideas and voted to call ourselves..."The Eagles!" We'll be getting patrol patches to put on our uniforms at our next meeting, October 19th.

At our last two meetings, we did a lot of fun stuff, including making a video for our website! You can click here to see it. Doing the video helped us on our way to earning our Communicator Activity Badge. James, Josh and Matthew V. already earned their and received them at our last Pack Night. Matthew F. finished his, too, and will receive it at October's Pack Night.

We also paid a visit to Troop 200 at their campout at KMSR, where we hiked Tillman Ravine and saw Buttermilk Falls, which was beautiful (and very high up!) We'll have other opportunities to camp with the Boy Scouts -- hopefully everyone will be able to make the next one.

Speaking of camping, we had our Family Camping Trip this past weekend at Jenny Jump State Park. It was a great time for everyone. We took a three-mile hike to Ghost Lake (not really scary), made rope swings and started our first campfire.

At our next den meeting, we'll finish making our hiking sticks and hopefully practice some skits and songs for October's Pack Night.

We're off and running!

Pack 119's newest Webelos Scouts had their first meeting of the year this week -- it was great to have everyone back!

We had a lot of fun making coded messages, playing some games and building a signalling device. We also picked our first denner and assistant denner!

Our next meeting will be on Sept. 21st from 6:30 to 8:00 at Mr. La Tournous' house. Mrs. Massimo has kindly offered to bring snacks.

If you're still having trouble finding a place that has uniform articles and handbooks in stock, please contact Mr. La Tournous with what you need. He will put together a list and try to get all the items from the scout shop near his office.
